Since the mid 1990s, university physics departments have been closing. This has produced areas of the country in which no local university runs a physics course. Research shows that students are less likely to take a physics degree if it is not offered at a university within twenty four miles of their home. They are also less likely to take physics if their parents are in one of the lower socio-economic groups.
In the Access Strand, we aim to make degree courses more accessible and available in more places. By working with universities, we hope to widen participation in physics-based degrees.
